About New Haven Reads
New Haven Reads is a community literacy center that provides free one-on-one tutoring to children who struggle with reading. Founded in 2001, it grew out of a simple idea: pairing volunteer tutors with students who need extra help to become confident readers.
Today the organization serves more than 500 students a year across multiple sites, offering after-school tutoring, a free book bank that has distributed millions of books, and family literacy programming. Research shows that reading proficiency by third grade is one of the strongest predictors of long-term academic success — and New Haven Reads exists to close that gap.
The program is powered by hundreds of volunteer tutors who commit to weekly sessions throughout the school year.
