Terms of Service

ServeLocal is a free directory of volunteer opportunities within about 30 miles of New Haven, Connecticut, together with a directory of registered nonprofits in the same area. Account holders can save opportunities, keep a log of hours served, and exchange messages with organizations that have registered on the site.

By creating an account or using the site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use ServeLocal.

ServeLocal is a listing service. We are not the organizer of the opportunities we list, we are not a party to your arrangement with any organization, and we do not employ, screen, supervise, or insure anyone. Most listings are imported from public sources and belong to organizations that have no relationship with us.

Before you volunteer anywhere, confirm the details directly with the organization. Use ordinary judgment about your own safety, particularly for opportunities involving home visits, transport, or working with children or vulnerable adults — those normally require background checks that the organization, not ServeLocal, arranges.

Volunteer listings are imported weekly from Idealist's public listings; nonprofit records come from the IRS Exempt Organization register and public Form 990 filings. We reproduce that information as published and refresh it regularly, but we cannot guarantee it is current, complete, or correct. Listings may be filled, cancelled, or changed without our knowing.

• You must be at least 13 to hold an account. If you are under 18, please have a parent or guardian involved in what you sign up for.
• Give accurate information, and keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
• One account per person. Organization accounts must be created by someone authorized to act for that organization.
• Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed by someone else.

Do not use ServeLocal to:

• Post anything false, misleading, or fraudulent — including opportunities that do not exist or organizations you do not represent.
• Harass, threaten, or abuse anyone, or send unsolicited bulk messages.
• Solicit money, donations, or personal financial information from other users.
• Collect other users' information by scraping, automated means, or otherwise.
• Attempt to break, overload, or gain unauthorized access to the site.
• Post anything unlawful, or anything that infringes someone else's rights.

We can suspend or remove any account that breaks these rules, or any content that does, without notice.

You keep ownership of what you write — your organization description, messages, and hour logs remain yours. You give us permission to store and display that content as needed to run the site. You confirm you have the right to post what you post.

Hours you log are self-reported. ServeLocal records what you enter but does not independently verify it. If you need hours certified for a school, court, or employer requirement, that verification has to come from the organization you served — check what proof they need before you rely on your log here.

The site is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. We do not promise it will always be available, error-free, or that any particular opportunity will still be open. We may change or discontinue features at any time.

To the fullest extent the law allows, ServeLocal is not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the site, from any listing, or from any interaction with an organization or another user. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Your dealings with organizations you find here are between you and them.

You can stop using ServeLocal whenever you like and ask us to delete your account — see the Privacy Policy for how that works and what happens to your records.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Connecticut, and any dispute will be handled by the courts of that state.

We may update these terms. If a change materially affects your rights, we will notify account holders by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use the site after that means you accept the revised terms.
